Mattress making
Mattress making – materials

The materials we use to make our mattresses/futons, such as cotton, wool, coconut fibres, seaweed, and horsehair, are 100% natural. Our priority is to work with completely harmless, antibacterial and hypoallergenic natural materials. When making our mattresses we combine these materials to achieve different firmness grades of the futons. Making futons is based on placing layers of materials onto each other. Each of these layers has its unique functions and properties. This way we make sure that all the types of our mattresses are comfortable and our customers can choose the right one for their healthy sleep.

Cotton:

Cotton

Is the cornerstone of every futon. Cotton boasts great moisture absorption, adds airiness and lightness to the mattress. It is very firm, yet pleasant and soft to the touch. Thanks to these properties it can adapt to the shape of your body. Cotton mattresses are some of the hardest futons and thanks to their firmness they can be used for a sleeper sofa or directly on the floor. Cotton is one of the most important textile fibre crops. These fibres are a product of the cotton plant. Cotton’s great advantage is that it does not cause any skin irritation or allergic reactions.
However, it is important where and how cotton is processed. We use mostly Egyptian cotton which, thanks to the conditions it is cultivated in, reaches the highest standards of quality and purity. Such cotton is then processed using special technologies that are far beyond the means of small manufacturers. The following futons contain cotton. The cotton certification is available HERE.

Wool:

Wool
Is a popular material for making natural mattresses. Its flexibility and durability are on par with cotton and it is much better at absorbing moisture and regulating body temperature – it keeps you warm in winter and cools you down in summer. That’s why it is often used in natural mattresses. Thanks to these properties, it is recommended to people who are suffering from back pain.

Coconut with latex:

Coconut

Ordinary coconut fibres tend to wear rather quickly. That’s why we chose a combination of coconut and latex to make our mattresses last longer. Thanks to latex the mattresses are much sturdier and more durable. Latex adds flexibility to the coconut fibres and helps to retain their shape. However, the coconut board still remains very tough. It adds firmness to the futon and increases its carrying capacity. Thanks to the coconut layer the mattress is more breathable. It is suitable for double beds.
Coconut fibres are a renewable natural resource and are obtained from the outer shell of coconuts. The fibres are firm, durable and moisture resistant. The following mattresses contain coconut: Coconut Mattress, Foam and Coconut Mattress, Aloe Vera Mattress. Coconut fibre certificate.

Latex and natural rubber:

Latex and natural rubber
This natural material makes the mattresses softer and more flexible. The latex layer allows air to get to the other layers of the mattress. Natural rubber is much more resistant to mites than other materials; to increase its durability it is combined with 20 % of regular latex. The natural mattresses with latex are great for folding/sleeper sofas. Thanks to their pleasant springiness you will enjoy both sitting and sleeping on them. Latex is a white liquid produced by the lactiferous cells of the rubber tree. After drying up, this liquid turns into a soft, porous matter. Natural rubber has hypoallergenic and antimicrobial properties. The following mattresses contain latex: Latex Mattress, Horsehair Mattress, Natural Mattress with Horsehair, Mattress with Coconut Fibres and the Aloe Vera Mattress. Latex certificates.

Horsehair:

Horsehair
Mattresses with horsehair are very flexible and comfortable. Thanks to the way the horsehair is treated, it excels at accumulating heat and reducing moisture. These properties are the main reason it has been used in natural mattresses for hundreds of years.
By no means should you worry about the health and well-being of the noble beasts that produce them. This textile material is obtained, in a humane way, from tails and manes of horses. It is 100% environmentally friendly and renewable. The following mattresses contain horsehair: Horsehair Mattress, Natural Mattress with Horsehair. And other, mostly luxury mattresses.

Flax:

Flax
Flax fibres are longer and tougher than cotton. They are less flexible yet strong and resistant to tension. Other advantages of flax fibres are great moisture absorption and heat conductivity. The natural flax mattresses are very durable – flax fibres deteriorate very slowly. Flax fibre is obtained from the stems of the common flax that is said to be one of the first plants to be utilized by humans. Cool to touch, easy to wash. The following mattresses contain Flax: Flax Mattress.

Seaweed:

Seaweed
Dried seaweed is a popular ingredient of natural mattresses; it is organically treated and mechanically bound. The resulting board is then used as one of the layers of the natural mattress retaining all the healthy substances seaweed normally contains – e.g. iodine which protects you from allergies, asthma, and respiratory problems. Seaweed in your mattress can also improve the condition of your skin. Seaweed is very light and breathable and can be found e.g. in the following mattresses: Seaweed – palliasse.

Mattress coil system:

Mattress coil system

In our mattresses, we use special coil pockets of 12 cm in height. The core of the mattress consists of little coils inserted in small pockets made from unwoven fabric. One of the advantages of the coil pockets is that they are separated, which means that compressing one coil does not influence the others. Another advantage of coil springs is that they offer great breathability which leads to better absorption of body moisture. Moreover, the coils provide ideal support for your body in any position. Coil pockets are extremely durable and you can find them in our thicker, luxury mattress and Pocketed Coil Mattresses.

Pine wood:

Pine wood
Pine wood is a popular choice when making furniture – mostly because of its unique properties which include great appearance, ease of processing, resilience, environmental friendliness, and relatively low cost. Pine wood can make your home more cosy, warm, casual, yet elegant. Pine wood is firm, flexible and contains a larger percentage of resin. It is easy to work, has a straight wood grain and does not change in volume much over time. Pine wood has been used for centuries to make both indoor and outdoor furniture. When damaged, pine furniture is quite easy to repair because pine wood usually does not have any veneer or laminated surface that could get scratched. One has to expect some knots in the wood – they are part of the charm of pine furniture. Furniture made from properly worked pine wood can last for decades. It will remain smooth to the touch, sturdy, yet elegant. The largest category of our pine furniture are beds made from solid pine wood. You can choose from a number of models. There are designer beds, lower beds of a simple, yet elegant design inspired by the Japanese tradition or regular double beds, and many others.

Spruce wood:

Spruce wood
Quality-wise, spruce wood is very similar to pine wood. However, if you want to add some colour to your furniture, we recommend you choose spruce wood because its colour doesn’t change much in time. Spruce wood is silky smooth and has a pleasant resinous smell. It is relatively light, yet tough, firm, and flexible. It is great at withstanding both high and low temperatures. Indoors, spruce furniture will last you for many years. Spruce wood has a nice, decorative wood grain and is suitable for any type of staining. In recent years, elevated beds have become rather popular; why not choose a spruce one?

Beech wood:

Beech wood
Among deciduous trees, beech wood is one the most commonly used. It is firm, hard, and not very flexible. Beech wood is, in contrast with spruce and pine, a lot heavier; it is sought-after mostly because of its firmness and durability. Beech wood furniture is light in colour and goes well with almost any interior. The quality and precision of the workmanship is sure to please every customer. Thanks to its high quality, beech wood furniture will serve you well for many years. Beech wood can be treated with an environmentally friendly coating which both protects it and accentuates the beauty of its natural wood grain. Because of its hardness, beech wood is suitable for making beds and children’s furniture – e.g. these two beds with storage space that would go great in any kid’s room. Children’s Wooden Bed and Beech Bed.
